Zelma Dixon departed this life on Wed., March 19, 2014, at 2:00 am at Nazareth Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. The Lord called Zelma home to a more heavenly place. Zelma was born August 3, 1935 in Crawfordville, Georgia, to the late Willie Harris and Edna C. Harris. She was one of eight children. Her siblings Anna Bates, Gayzella Rice, Marvene Harris and Willie Harris, Jr. preceded her in death. Zelma accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at a very young age. She attended Level Hill Baptist Church in Crawfordville, GA. She and her sisters sang in the church choir. They were very close to one another and loved each other very much. Zelma and her sisters lost their parents and brother when they were children. She was very protective of her children. She washed all of her children's clothes by hand for many years before she could acquire a washing machine. She baked cakes and sold them to buy her children winter coats. She was a very hard worker, a committed wife and mother. Zelma would always say, "Don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today"; "Life waits for no one" and "Whatever job you do, even if it's sweeping a floor, do your best". After her husband, James, started Dixon and Sons Moving & Storage, Zelma worked in an administrative capacity for the company for many years in conjunction with being a homemaker. It was a family owned business. She increased profits tremendously. Her ability to think quickly on her feet and to counter one's response left people speechless. She was very economical-she could take a little money and buy so much with it. She kept an immaculate house and her children spotless. She gave a birthday celebration for each of her children, every year until their 16th birthday. She instilled morals into all of her children. She patiently taught and educated each of her children before they entered school, as well as teach them to read. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Zelma leaves fond memories which will be cherished by all. She is a beloved sister to: Etheline Bell, Jeanette Harris and Evelyn Osborne, as well as a loving and sadly missed sister of Deborah Fields, Stanford Dixon (Gwendolyn), Sr., Randall Dixon, Barry Dixon (Teresa), Sandra Dixon-Ross (Raymond), and Gregory Dixon. She also leaves behind her 9 cherished grandchildren: Michael, Jr., Demond, Natasha, Raymond, Jr., Rodney, Stacy, Stanford, Jr., Stevie and LaShandra; 11 well loved great grandchildren: Tiffany Shaela, Maya, Tamia, Shannon, Anthony, Jordan, Kirsten, Tayshaun, Taylor and Tashya. Zelma will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
